Reflux’, Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), ‘heartburn’ and hiatus hernia are terms used to describe the problem of stomach juices ‘refluxing’ back up from the stomach towards your throat. This classically causes a painful burning in the chest known as ‘heartburn’. You could also experience other symptoms like a fullness in your chest, trouble swallowing, throat symptoms and shortness of breath. A hiatus hernia is where the stomach has abnormally ‘slipped’ into your chest behind the heart, which predisposes to reflux and heartburn. Keyhole surgery (Laparoscopic hiatus hernia repair / Laparoscopic Fundoplication) can be performed to fix this problem. Dr Le Page has performed hundreds of these procedures and has published international research on the condition. He audits the outcomes of patients undergoing surgery to ensure the highest quality. If you feel a specialist review may be indicated for you, please discuss with your GP and call (02) 9767 7908 to arrange an appointment with Dr. Le Page. Your individual circumstance will be clarified by Dr. Le Page during your review.
