An ingrown toenail is a painful condition where the edge of the nail (usually one of the large toes) ‘digs’ into the skin next to it. This makes it inflamed and painful and can become infected. Treatment seeks to treat any inflammation, manage the part of the nail that is causing the problem and avoiding factors that may cause it (such as tight fitting shoes). Your GP may be able to treat this.Often it is a recurring problem and more definitive treatment is required by a surgeon.
Surgery entails removing the side of the nail causing the problem, and also the tissue underneath it called the nail bed which makes the toenail grow again each time it is cut. This prevents it growing back on the side with the recurring problem. This operation can be performed as day case operation and can be done under local anaesthetic.
