Laparoscopic Obesity / Bariatric Surgery

Surgery to achieve weight loss has been performed for over 50 years. Over this time there have been dramatic advances in technology and surgical care that has allowed very safe, reliable and effective surgery to be performed even for patients with severe obesity and other illnesses. Dr. Le Page performs these operations that are almost exclusively performed by laparoscopy (keyhole) and need only a 1-2 night hospital stay. There are 3 main options for weight loss surgery, the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic gastric band and laparoscopic gastric bypass. Each have their merits (see the links for each surgery type).

Dr. Le Page has performed around 1000 operations to help obese patients manage their weight, health and wellbeing. He has published international research on the condition and audits the outcomes of patients undergoing surgery to ensure the highest quality, including through the official national obesity surgical society (ANZMOSS).

Dr. Le Page will provide to you a recommendation on the merits of surgery and the type of surgery best for you, but will respect your wishes and opinion. He will look after you in hospital and co-ordinate your aftercare with a dietician and any other health professionals (through the OClinic) who can optimise your outcome. Obesity is defined by a body mass index (BMI) over 30 (click here to calculate your BMI). You may be a candidate for weight loss surgery if you are in the obese category or above, depending on your health profile and after review with Dr Le Page.

If you feel a specialist review may be indicated for you, please discuss with your GP and call (02) 9767 7908 to arrange an appointment with Dr. Le Page. Your individual circumstance will be clarified by Dr. Le Page during your review.
