Revision Obesity / Bariatric Surgery

Some people may put on a significant amount of weight after having previously undergone one of the bariatric surgical procedures. They may also have had endoscopic procedures for weight loss or surgery on the stomach for other reasons (eg. hiatus hernia repair or fundoplication). In these situations there can still be an option for having revision surgery, with the aim of getting back on track with weight loss and improved health. For example, a patient with a gastric band can have this removed if it is ineffective or causing problems and can undergo a sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass. Similarly, a patient having had a sleeve gastrectomy could have a repeat sleeve gastrectomy, or even a gastric bypass. The surgery is still usually able to be done keyhole. A full thorough assessment is critical, which may include x-rays, endoscopy and reviews by allied health staff such as a dietician. The patient must be assessed by an experienced surgeon and undertaken by a surgeon who has extensive experience in revision obesity surgery. Dr Le Page has performed many such operations. He has also specifically published international research on gastric band patients undergoing revision sleeve gastrectomy. He audits the outcomes of his patients to ensure the highest quality, including through the official national obesity surgical society (ANZMOSS). Dr Le Page will provide to you a recommendation on the merits of surgery and if it is best to proceed, on the type of surgery best for you. He will look after you in hospital and co-ordinate your aftercare with a dietician and any other health professionals who can optimise your outcome. Obesity is defined by a body mass index (BMI) over 30 (click here to calculate your BMI ). You may be a candidate for weight loss surgery if you are in the obese category or above, depending on your health profile and after review with Dr Le Page.
