About

Dr Phil Le Page has established himself as a highly sought after and respected Surgeon in Sydney. His main expertise includes Keyhole / Laparoscopic Surgery (such as Hernias, Gallstones), Weight-Loss / Bariatric Surgery (providing a supportive multi-disciplinary approach), Specialised Upper Gastro-Intestinal Surgery (such as Reflux, Oesophageal and Stomach Cancer) and Endoscopy.

“I review patients (referred by their GP or specialist) in one of my rooms based in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, North Shore, Concord & Western Sydney. I also enjoy providing services for Regional NSW patients & I undertake Telehealth Consultations for patients when necessary. It is also important in my field to maintain emergency surgery skills and I do this by working at the emergency departments of the Sydney Adventist, Concord and Northern Beaches Hospitals.

“I always ensure I maintain up to date skills and knowledge through attending and speaking at conferences, and by reviewing contemporary journals. I also audit my patients outcomes through Official National Patient Audits such as ANZGOSA and the Bariatric Surgery Registry

I grew up and attended school in Sydney & Melbourne, then graduated with honours in M.B.B.S. from Melbourne University in 2001. During my final year of medicine I was proud to be awarded the J.P.Ryan prize for Surgery. In my first two years as a Doctor I worked in a number of medical fields to gain a breadth of experience before choosing to train in General Surgery at the Royal Melbourne and Austin Hospitals. It was a very happy day for me to receive my Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS) in 2011 during an International RACS Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

My early training allowed me to develop the advanced skills needed in performing such operations as keyhole/laparoscopic groin and abdominal wall hernias and keyhole gallbladder surgery (Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy), with additional advanced skills of removing gallstones from near the pancreas. Endoscopy (gastroscopy) and colonoscopy were also key features and I have continued to perform these to date.

I chose to sub-specialise in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery after realising my enthusiasm for tackling the challenging technical aspects and disease types of this surgical field. Again, with the goal of helping each individual I treat. Such examples of my interest included training in keyhole Hiatus Hernia Surgery which is undertaken through the diaphragm and just behind the heart…….to being right in the frontline of helping to manage the increasing burden of obesity for individuals and our society…….and also the satisfaction of a collaborative therapeutic approach to managing unfortunate patients who develop Upper GastroIntestinal Malignancies.

This specialised training was with the official ANZGOSA (Australian and New Zealand Gastro-oesophageal Surgical Association) training program, of which I was in the second year of its inception. Year one and two were at St.Vincent’s and Concord Hospital’s in Sydney respectively. In 2013 I spent a year in Edinburgh in the UK under the sponsorship of ANZGOSA and The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (lead by Dr Simon Paterson-Brown), further expanding my specific skills in cancer, obesity and hernia surgery.

On return from Edinburgh in 2014 I was privileged to work with the Royal Flying Doctor Service as their surgeon servicing remote communities

In the same year I began work as a consultant surgeon at the Sydney Adventist, Mater, Concord, Strathfield Private Hospitals and the OClinic. It was and remains a privilege to work with colleagues such as Ass. Prof. Greg Falk, Dr Craig Taylor and Dr David Martin at these great institutions. In 2018 I was on the first group of staff to work at the new Northern Beaches Hospital and enjoyed the challenge of developing and helping to make this Hospital a sought after place for patients to be treated. In 2019 I began offering services in the Campbelltown area and areas outside of Sydney. I maintain professional links with other specialists and allied health staff (eg. dietitians)

I am proud of my team who helps to look after you including my main Practice Manager Tracy and receptionist Louise; Dietitians Carmel, Sue and Caroline; theatre and hospital teams of nurses, anaesthetists, surgery assistants and trainee surgeons.

I have continued to treat increasing numbers of patients at these locations and I perform surgery, endoscopy and consultations throughout the week.

For convenience to my patients I offer a number of locations where we can meet each other and discuss your health issues during our consultation. I enjoy going to each area and these include the Northern Beaches, Sydney Adventist, Concord Hospitals and Campbelltown areas.

I am glad to also offer telehealth services to regional patients to ensure more remote patients have equitable access to specialised healthcare. During COVID times I have also adapted to allow telehealth consultations for my Sydney based patients.
