Dr. Le Page treats specialised disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract, weight loss operations and endoscopic procedures.
Dr Phil Le Page is a specialised bariatric surgeon and he and his team have successfully treated thousands of people who are in need of help for significantly losing weight and getting back to health and happiness.
“I pride myself on ensuring you meet me as your surgeon at the initial consultation so that we can both understand your struggles and discuss how weight loss surgery can help you. It’s important for me to establish a friendly professional relationship throughout your journey from first meeting, through to surgery and beyond with my team during your re-establishment of a healthy weight and lifestyle.”
Dr Phil Le Page chooses to audit all his patient’s outcomes in the National Bariatric Surgery Registry (BSR) in order to provide quality assurance. The national regular routine auditing shows his outcomes are superior to the average bariatric surgeon. His subspeciality training was focused on the stomach and upper gut with the Australian and New Zealand Gastro-Oesophageal Association between 2011 and 2013. This training included Bariatric Surgery Specialisation at Concord Hospital in Sydney (one of NSW’s only public hospital bariatric surgery centres) and Edinburgh in the UK. He has been conducting weight loss treatments at each of his attending Hospitals since 2014.

Bariatric surgery in Sydney has evolved into a speciality in its own right. The operations are essentially performed laparoscopically, and even robotically or endoscopically now. Being an elective operation we want the operation to be effective, well tolerated and the complication rate to be very low. This is always best delivered by a surgeon who has extensive experience in the technical aspects of surgery and caring for such patients beyond surgery.
When seeking bariatric surgery in Sydney, cost becomes a significant factor since it is not readily available in the public hospital system. Several factors come into play in determining the overall expenses, such as the presence of private health insurance and any prior surgical history.
A number of people have had weight loss surgery before and may be exploring further surgery. This may be because it has become less effective, or adverse symptoms may have developed. After full assessment by your surgeon, further surgery can usually be offered following discussions on the benefits and risks.
An assessment needs to be made about whether you fit traditional guidelines for undergoing surgery, and on the benefits and risks. At the very least a BMI of 30 or above is required, in addition Dr Le Page assesses other factors relating to the impact of your weight.
People have often lived with being overweight or obese their whole lives. Often they may not have appreciated the reasons this developed. Awareness of contributing factors is an important step in effecting change, be it as regards your weight or any other area of your life you seek change in.
It can appear confusing the number of different options for surgery, and the different names you may read. There are 2 common operations performed now (even though you may read various names which are really the same surgery) and it is important to understand these, often best done during a consultation. Variations do exist in the technical aspects which are more factors for the surgeon to consider.
