Is it common to vomit after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy?

Vomiting is rare in my experience after seeing patients in follow-up following around 2000 sleeve gastrectomy operations. This patient occasionally vomited after eating certain foods which is important for me to investigate as this is not common and this can be rectified. Weight loss had come down from 164kg to 104kh over 12months and importantly had not gone down further over a few months, so this was more of a “fine-tuning” exercise in trying to improve this symptom for him.

The patient I just saw is one year post-laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and has lost 60 kilograms, weighing 104 kilos now. He’s tall and has done well overall, but he’s experiencing some food intolerances, particularly with dry chicken and occasionally eggs, which is somewhat unpredictable. This is unusual after this type of surgery, though it can happen if there’s a kink in the sleeve. I’m scheduling a gastroscopy to investigate this, as the expectation after the procedure is generally good food tolerance without vomiting, just with smaller portions. While meats and breads may take longer to digest, it’s uncommon to have such intolerances.
